A factory worker caught drink driving was banned from the road for 16 months at Dungannon Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Justas Viatickus (25), of Edward Street, Newry, was also fined £250 with a £15 offender levy for driving with excess alcohol in the vicinity of Charlemont on May 22.

The court heard police responded to a report of a drunk driver travelling on the Dungannon Road towards Moy at around 9.15pm and later stopped Viatickus on the Armagh Road.

A PPS lawyer said the defendant’s speech was slurred and he smelled of intoxicating liquor. He later provided a specimen which showed an alcohol reading of 81mgs in breath - the limit is 35.

A defence lawyer said Viatickus was on his way home and had fully cooperated with the police when stopped.

District Judge Michael Ranaghan remarked it was “a very high reading.”
